Why the Tom Higby Sportsmanship Award?Printable

The Tom Higby Sportsmanship Award was instituted to encourage the highest level of sportsmanship within the Leagues operated by District IV at both the Recreational and Competitive levels. To learn more about Tom Higby, click here:Going

How it Works?

During each Match you play within a District IV operated league, your team's sportsmanship will be rated by the referee from that match.

The rating system ranges from 1 - 5. (1 = poor 5 = excellent)

Each Team will be rated in three different areas:

  1. Players/Team -

The players actions and attitudes on and off the field will be rated.

  2. Coaching Staff (Coach, Assistant Coach, Trainier) -

The staff's actions collective regarding their actions and attitudes on and off the filed of play will be rated.

  3. Spectators/Sidelines

The group as a whole will be rated on their actions before, during and after the match will be rated. (Remember, the coach is ultimately responsible for the actions of his/her sidelines and failure to maintain a positive sideline can also affect the coaching staff ratings).

The maximum amount of points a team can achieve at any one match is 15.

The reporting of these Sportsmanship points will be done via the applicable web site (KPSRA, District IV) when each Center Referee and Assistant Referee reports the match results via their Match Report.

Therefore, if in fact your match has a Center Official and two (2) Assistant Referees at a match, that would constitute 3 separate Match Reports for this match as each is requested to submit a report. For a competitive team with a 14 game season, this could mean up to 42 separate reports at the end of the league season.

In the case of a match where no referee is present, no sportsmanship scores will be reported for this match. The teams will not be penalized for having no sportsmanship points for this match. Each teams average points will be determined by taking the total number of points received, divided by the number of Match Reports in which sportsmanship scores were reported.

Presentation of Tom Higby Sportsmanship Awards

The District will not be conducting its own Award Ceremony after the conclusion of this season. Instead, the District plans to make its presentation of Divisional Awards and the Tom Higby Sportsmanship Awards at the indivudal Club Award presentations to acknowledge those teams who have won their Division and those with the highest Sportsmanship rating points.
